THE PRODUCT

No technology yet but now it is time to consider a mattress with Memory Foam.  Memory foam is quite simply polyurethane with additional chemicals for adapting its viscosity and density.  It is often referred to as “visco-elastic”  foam with open cells.   It was originally developed by NASA to improve the safely of aircraft cushions.

The cells respond to body temperature, becoming softer in areas where contact is made.  This creates a temperature sensitive, pressure-relieving mattress that moulds itself to the contours of your body and gives it optimum support.  This leads to more restful and comfortable sleep, particularly for sufferers with back pain, neck pain and muscle problems.  Other mattress materials, such as springs, cannot fully respond to an individual’s shape and sleeping habits, whereas memory foam creates a full moulding effect.  Consequently, the lack of pressure points encourages less turning and therefore a more peaceful sleep.  Memory foam has been used in healthcare for many years due to its pressure relieving properties.

Its viscose properties allow memory foam to return to its original form very quickly and it sustains this capability over an extended period, hence increasing its lifespan.  You will not find yourself rolling into the middle of a mattress with memory foam.

CONSTRUCTION

Memory foam mattresses are constructed in layers, which vary according to the quality and cost.  A top layer is always the memory foam, which starts from 20mm up to 125mm.  Support layers below may be latex, pocket springs or high resistance foam, which forms the core of the mattress.    The base may be 100mm to 225mm as it provides the support and stability.  Many memory foam beds also have a quilted top layer, which can be made of super soft foam or Dacron fibers.  This layer adds more softness and comfort to the mattress acting rather like a topper.

Ventilation for such mattresses is imperative both for the health of the sleepers and the extended life of the mattress.  It must remain at the right temperature and, for Feng Shui enthusiasts, the right orientation.  This is normally achieved with a 3D band on the main mattress for ventilation.

TENSION

Various tensions are available and are achieved through the density of the foam, thus giving the mattress the individual feel required.  The memory foam mattress will keep its tension for many years as it is a solid construction.  Couple that with a pillow top and it makes a very comfortable mattress that should keep its comfort for many years.
